Prostadynia, also known as prostatodynia or PD, technically is not a true form of prostatitis. It is included among these disorders of the prostate because its symptoms and their treatment are similar to those of nonbacterial prostatitis (NBP).

Causes

No one knows what causes PD. Researchers have noted it is usually found in men with "Type A" personalities in high-stress situations, suggesting it may be some form of systemic response to environmental conditions.

How is this condition diagnosed?

Like NBP, a diagnosis of PD usually is made after other forms of prostatitis have been ruled out. Patients with PD exhibit no bacteria in cultures or urine, similar to those with NBP. Unlike NBP or CBP, however, patients with prostadynia typically show an absence of elevated white blood cells in their urine samples and cultures.
